El economista estadounidense Rober J. Shiller que, junto a sus compatriotas Eugene F. Fama y Lars Peter Hansen, ha sido galardonado con el Nobel de Economía 2013, ha señalado que la actual crisis refleja los fallos del sistema financiero y llevará «décadas» solucionarlos. «La crisis financiera reflejó los fallos e imperfecciones de nuestro sistema financiero», indicó Shiller en una breve intervención telefónica durante la rueda de prensa en la que fue anunciado el nombre de los ganadores del premio. «Estamos ya trabajando en corregir estos fallos, pero llevará décadas», añadió, aunque recordó que «ha habido crisis financieras muchas veces a lo largo de la historia y hemos aprendido de ellas». Shiller, nacido en 1949 en Detroit, y que actualmente imparte clases en la Universidad de Yale, dijo haber recibido el anuncio del premio con «incredulidad», aunque reconoció que muchas personas en su entorno le habían hablado de esta posibilidad. «Tenía un montón de gente a mi alrededor que me hablaba de ello, pero no me lo esperaba», añadió el economista, quien destacó el carácter «fascinante» y la importancia de la Economía, así como su «felicidad» por el reconocimiento a una teoría que incluye elementos «controvertidos», pero útiles para la sociedad y que debe servir para el desarrollo del resto de actividades del ser humano. Trío de estadounidenses En concreto, de los 45 Nobel de Economía concedidos a un total de 74 personas, un total de 49 premiados eran estadounidenses. Asimismo, la edad de los galardonados cumple con la tendencia a valorar largas carreras, ya que los ganadores del Nobel de Economía tienen una edad media de 67 años, por encima de la media de 59 años del conjunto de ganadores del Nobel en todas las disciplinas. Así, Eugene Fama, nacido en 1939, es profesor de Finanzas en la Universidad de Chicago, donde comparte campus con Lars Peter Hansen, nacido en 1952, quien imparte clases de Economía y Estadística; mientras Robert J. Shiller, nacido en 1946, imparte clases en la Universidad de Yale. Análisis empíricos de precios «No hay manera de predecir los precios de acciones y bonos para los próximos días y semanas, pero sí es posible prever la evolución amplia de esos precios en periodos más largos, como los próximos tres a cinco años», ha declarado el Comité Nobel en su comunicado. «Estos hallazgos, que pueden parecer sorprendentes y contradictorios, han sido conseguidos y analizados por los laureados de este año y han sentado las bases para la comprensión actual de los precios de los activos en función, por una parte, de las fluctuaciones y las actitudes en el riesgo y, por otra, de los comportamientos y las fricciones del mercado«, ha añadido. Con la concesión del galardón de Economía se cierra la presente edición de los Nobel. El Nobel de Economía se denomina oficialmente Premio de Ciencias Económicas del Banco de Suecia en memoria de Alfred Nobel, ya que no corresponde al testamento original de Nobel y fue establecido por el instituto emisor sueco en 1968 para conmemorar su 300 aniversario. Los primeros galardonados con el premio fueron el noruego Ragnar Frisch y el holandés Jan Tinbergen en 1969, mientras que en 2012 fue concedido a los académicos estadounidenses, Alvin E. Roth y Lloyd S. Shapley. Desde su creación, el Nobel de Economía ha reconocido a figuras como Milton Friedman, Paul A. Samuelson, Amartya Sen, James Tobin, Joseph Stiglitz, Paul Krugman, Robert Solow y Robert Mundell. Hasta la fecha, sólo una mujer, la estadounidense Elinor Ostrom, ha sido distinguida con este galardón. |

American economist Robert J. Shiller together with colleagues Eugene F. Fama and Lars Peter Hansen have been awarded the 2013 Nobel Prize in Economics and has said that the current crisis reflects the errors in the financial system, which will take decades to fix. “The financial crisis reflected the errors and imperfections in our financial system,” Shiller indicated in a short telephone call during the press conference when the names of the winners were announced. “We are already working to fix these errors, but it will take decades,” he added while saying that “there have been financial crises many times throughout history and we´ve learned from them.” Shiller, born in 1949 in Detroit and currently teaching at Yale University, said he received the announcement with “disbelief”, although the acknowledged that many people around him had told him of the possibility of winning. “I had a lot of people around me talking about it, but I didn´t expect to win,” added the economist who stressed the “fascinating” nature and importance of the economy, as well as his “happiness” over the acceptance of a theory that includes “controversial” elements but also useful ones for society that should serve towards the development of the rest of human activities. Trio of Americans Specifically, of the 45 Nobel Prizes awarded to a total of 79 people, 49 of those people were Americans. Furthermore, the age of the winner maintains the tendency to value long careers since their average age is 67, whereas the average age of the rest of the Nobel Prizes in all areas is 59 years-old. The awarding of the Economics prizes closes the current edition of the Nobel Prizes. The Nobel Prize in Economics is officially called the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel since it wasn´t a part of Nobel´s original will and was established by the Sweeden financial entity in 1968 to commemorate its 300th anniversary. The first winners of the prize were Norwegian Ragnar Frisch and Dutchman Jan Tinbergen in 1969, while in 2012 it was awarded to American professors Alvin E. Roth and Lloyd S. Shapley. Since its creation, the Nobel Prize in Economics has been awarded to figures like Milton Friedman, Paul A. Samuelson, Amartya Sen, James Tobin, Joseph Stiglitz, Paul Krugman, Robert Solow and Robert Mundell. To date, only one woman has been distinguished with this honor, Elinor Ostrom (American). |
