The President of the European Parliament proposes forcing banks to lend

19/08/2013 | Europa Press – Europa Press English

The European Parliament (EP) President, Martin Schulz of Germany, has laid out the necessity to analyze the legal possibilities of forcing banks to make loans which help reactive the real economy.

“We need to examine if we can legally force banks to transfer this cheap money, at least in part, to the real economy. Under favorable conditions, or course,” said Schulz in an interview published by “Die Zeit”.

“We cannot allow these financial entities to take money from the BCE at practically zero interest and just stockpile it or invest it for their own benefit,” said the German politician. “We must stop feeding a new bubble,” he added.

However, the EP President defended the actions of the BCE because he considers that its low interest policies have “successfully” protected the Eurozone from an utter collapse, in spite of hurting savers and small-time investors.

“The Central Bank is trying to protect the Eurozone from collapse with its low rates, successfully thank God. What is more important right now; fighting against inflation or actively supporting the economy? I believe the economy is the priority at the moment,” he stated.

The only problem with these low interest rates is that the rates are not passed on the real economy since banks are accumulating cheap money and are not converting it into loans for businesses, which means no one is investing, added the EP President.

Furthermore, Schulz stressed that in spite of the latest positive data, the crisis is not over yet because important imbalances still persist at the heart of the Eurozone and are disguised by the data averages of the whole group.

Give Greece more time
Along these lines, the German politician stressed the importance of rebuilding those regions in the Eurozone that have been stuck for several years in a recession, such as the case in Greece, a country that he believes it´s necessary to ease the bailout conditions.

“If they use it to consolidate their budget, we should give Greece more time to pay back its loans and lower the rates on the preexisting loans,” he said.

Therefore, Schulz pointed out the need for the EU to take are a stronger role and proposed that the European investment bank lend its support to Hellene country by providing SMEs with credit.
