Spain pays 500 dollars to immigrants who want to go back home

03/09/2014 | Europa Press – Europa Press English

Broke, sick, stuck with debts or directly exploited by the mafias that brought them along to the last chapter of their odyssey to get to Europe. This is the reality that many immigrants are facing while they wait
in Morocco and because of this many of them prefer not to risk getting into Ceuta and Melilla and want to go back home.
To make their return easier, the Spanish Government is participating with other European countries to finance a voluntary return program that has already helped 4,269 people since 2005 and 158 already this year.

According to a report from the International Organization for Migration (IOM) accessed by Europa Press, this program “aims to give a human response to the management of illegal immigration in Morocco. One of the main objectives is to help illegal immigrants in Morocco, who are frequently in dangerous or vulnerable situations and wish to voluntarily go back to their country of origin”.

The system is basically based on helping these people get back home as well as providing them with around 500 dollars “in order to start anew” in their home country, said Europa Press sources who are familiar with these jobs who say how much these economic resources mean for people in regions in Africa where income per capita is very low.

Spain wants more countries to join in

The governments in Switzerland, Holland, Belgium and Spain (along with Morocco´s support) are collaborating together in this initiative. The Interior Department, headed by Jorge Fernández Díaz, gives this mechanism against illegal immigration a lot of importance and is working to raise awareness among his European colleagues and those in the European Union so they come together and are able to provide the best response to the reality of abandonment that many immigrants are going through in Morocco.

In 2013 Spain put 200,000€ towards the program and will be sending another 200,000€ for 2014. By providing these funds, Spain has contributed in helping send 247 people back to their home countries. The sources consulted indicate that this initiative is actually more economical than the costs the Government faces when taking in immigrants and sending them back on a plane or by other means.
