Trade Secretary García-Legaz says Spain will end the year with a financial surplus

23/08/2013 | Europa Press – Europa Press English

Trade Secretary of State Jaime García-Legaz is convinced that Spain is not living beyond its means and will end the year with a financial surplus of more than 2% of GDP.

In his statements made on Spain´s Radio Nacional and recorded by EuropaPress, García-Legaz said that without reducing financial dependence on outside sources, it would be “impossible” to have economic growth recovery. “Spain is no longer living beyond its means and doesn´t need to ask for money from the rest of the world to maintain their spending,” said the Trade Secretary.

In his opinion, a financial surplus of more than 2% means that Spain not only is generating resources and savings in order to finance its own spending but it is also able to generate a surplus in order to start paying back part of the external debt is has accumulated.

According to the Trade Secretary, this is “fundamental” to shows the rest of the world that Spain doesn´t need outside money and can adjust its way of life to fit its possibilities and start to pay back its debt.

In any case, García-Legaz made it clear that the country needs to persist in its reforms in order to get back to economic growth once again. “The combination of budget austerity, cleaning house, recovering financial equilibriums and structural reforms is taking us towards economic recovery,” he said.

Furthermore, he was very happy to boast about the trade balance data published yesterday by the Ministry of the economy and Competition which showed a trade deficit of 5.8244 billion euros during the first semester of the year, 68.8% less than a year before.

To García-Legaz, the data is “especially positive” because they are in contrast with what is going on in the other main economies of the eurozone since exports in Germany and Italy have decreased 2% and more than 5% in France.

The improvement comes from three factors
According to García-Legaz, the favorable evolution of Spain´s data can be attributed to three factors: the improvement of competitiveness, the increase in the number of exporting companies and the diversification of the exports to non-traditional countries.

When talking about the fall in imports, he reiterated that this is due, in part, to the substitution effect of national products, which can be seen in markets such as the automobile market. “It´s not that fewer cars are being sold, what´s occurred lately is that people are buying in Spain and that´s quite positive,” he said.
