5.- REVISA TUS PRODUCTOS FINANCIEROS

8 recommendations to manage your savings

02/03/2015 | Europa Press – Europa Press English

One of the main preoccupations in any household is how to be able to correctly manage the savings that were so hard to bring in. The European and Spanish economies are starting anew and soon this could lead to new possibilities for Spanish families.

Viewing this situation, the Spanish side of the European Financial Planning Association (EFPA Spain) has created a practical guide with eight pieces of advice to optimize our savings and investments over the next few months. Here are the recommendations:

1.- ORGANIZE YOUR BUDGET
Organize your budget and get rid of any unnecessary expenditures. The beginning of the year is a perfect opportunity to review all our punctual expenses and to eliminate or give up some of them being used for products or services a lot of times we don´t even use.

2.- WATCH DEBT LEVELS
The financial crisis has made one thing clear: we shouldn´t get into debt we can´t pay. To avoid this, we should above all evaluate if a specific expense or investment is really worth getting into debt, if we can make good on the periodic loan payments and if it better to lay out a savings plan to be able to pay for that expense or purchase when we have enough money.

3.- TAKE ADVANTAGE OF TAX REFORMS
Make the best of changes in the tax system. Among the measures included in the new Spanish tax rules are the reductions on taxes on savings, like with the new savings Plan 5 that some banking entities now have. In the case of pension plans, the Government´s tax bureau wants these products to be freed from taxes for up to 10 years, which can open the doors to younger tax payers to pension plans.

4.- AND THE DROP IN OIL PRICES
You also have to take advantage of the drop in oil prices. The fall in crude oil prices has made gasoline prices go down. Despite not being proportional, it has given drivers a breather since they can feel it in their wallet every time they fill up. Investors need to watch the markets and stocks can be helped or hurt by this change.

5.- TAKE A LOOK AT YOUR FINANCIAL PRODUCTS
Look over the conditions and fees of your financial products. The beginning of the year is the ideal time to review the conditions of some financial products that can be about to expire or change in some way. We also have to pay close attention to the fees related to the products since the differences between different financial entities can be astounding. When the time comes to put your salary, pension or unemployment check on direct deposit, look for professional help on which alternative will benefit you the most.

6.- LOOK FOR ALTERNATIVES TO DEPOSITS
The Bank of Spain´s limits and the ECB´s policy of lowering interest rates are not making things easy for the most conservative of savers, who before were hiding out in those deposits to ensure their yield. Now, investment funds or funds put into pension plans offer some tax advantages that make them interesting alternatives.

Today´s situation invites us more than ever before to seek out professional advice when trying to discover what´s the best product that´s adapted to our needs. Furthermore, with negative inflation we should consider real interest rates. That means a deposit for 0.5% with provide a real profitability of 1.5%.

7.- TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE NEW “MORTGAGE WARS”
Make the most out the “mortgage wars”. Every day there are more and more financial entities that are starting to intensely compete again for new mortgages by bettering their offers on differentials to the Euribor. The price of the mortgage is important but watch out; when taking out a loan to buy a home, make sure to look at all mortgage offers on the market and at all the conditions that go with every loan before making the choice that best suits you.

8. – MAKE A PERSONAL FINANCE PLAN
Make sure to have a personal financial plan. With a personal financial advisor it will be easier to get all your personal projects done. Improvising when investing money is a bad idea, and if we know the perfect product doesn´t exist, we will need professionally qualified help to guide us. A planner that understands the economic situation and our profile will help us develop an efficient plan to make the most out of our earning over the long-run.
