What is the European Investment Bank?

03/14/2014 | Europa Press – Europa Press English

Established in 1958 under the Treaty of Rome, the European Investment Bank (EIB) is a financial institution whose main activity is to finance projects that contribute to the development of the EU.

What is the EIB?
This is an institution that is entrusted with financing projects that are related to the EU´s objectives and projects, while looking to contribute to the development and cohesion of the member States. Headquartered in Luxembourg, it is a public institution that is dedicated to investing and loaning money in order to achieve common objectives related to the improvement of infrastructures, environmental protection, promoting enterprise (especially providing SMEs with support), expanding the European transport and communication networks or increasing the usage of competitive and sustainable energies.

Who makes up the EIB?
The EIB is constituted by the 28 member States of the EU, who have a stake in its capital. The member States are therefore the shareholders of the EIB, participating through contributions based on their relative weight and economic importance in the EU and in global markets.

In Spain´s case, last year the government signed off on the registration of shares to increase the EIB´s capital by providing 970 million euros, which will be doled out in installments over three years.

Does it only finance EU projects?
90% of the projects financed by the EIB are programs and initiatives from within the EU. However, it also provides credit to finance projects on the outside. This means that the EIB supports EU policies in areas related to the development and cooperation with associated countries. Currently, this includes Southern and Eastern Europe, developing countries in Africa, the Caribbean, the Pacific, South Africa, Asia and Latin America while also providing credit in neighboring Mediterranean areas.
