Soria says Spain´s brand is “stronger” abroad than within and that 2013 will be the last year of the recession

04/09/2013 | Europa Press – Europa Press English

The Industry, Tourism and Energy Minister, José Manuel Soria, said on Tuesday that Spain´s brand is “stronger” abroad than within the country since the positive signals that are appearing are still not being perceived due to the “very serious” unemployment situation and because consumption has not picked up.

Soria, in an interview on Antena 3 provided to Europa Press, indicated that the move by some auto industry companies, such as Renault, Nissan and Iveco, to “relocate” their production in Spain shows that the perception of Spain outside its borders is better than it is at home among the Spanish.

In his opinion, the “clear” move of these international companies is mainly because of two reasons: on one hand, to a “more favourable” evolution of labour costs
and, on the other hand, to the fact that Spain is the European country that is making the “most reforms”.

Even so, he admitted that one cannot speak about economic recovery with unemployment figures of more than five million, but he said that there are now some “favourable signs”, such as the fact that the Treasury is financing itself without having to get the EU´s help, especially when the debate of a few months ago was over when Spain was going to request a bailout.

Job creation with an increase of 1% in GDP
Along these same lines, he emphasised that according to national and international analysts, Spain´s economy will continue to shrink this year but that in 2014 it will grow, meaning that 2013 will be the “last year of recession in Spain”. However, he indicated that job growth will depend on how much the economy grows, while affirming that the labour market reform will allow employment to be created with growth of around 1%, when 2% growth was needed before.

Lastly, along with Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, he shared the idea that it´s necessary for the European Central Bank to act like the rest of the central banks and “help the economic recovery by injecting liquidity into the system” and not just concentrating on price controls in a “deflationist” environment caused by the recession.
