10 pieces of advice to become a business leader

05/19/2015 | Europa Press – Europa Press English

Exactly what a new leader has to have is a constant in conversation about business. The World of business Ideas (WOBI) is here to give you the key components to become a great leader in you company thanks to 10 experts.

1.- THINK ABOUT WHAT YOU SAY, AND HOW YOU SAY IT
The leader has to have a precise control over their language. Mario Alonso Puig, the author of books like “Madera de líder”, “Vivir es un asunto urgente” or “La respuesta”, says that “when an authentic leader speaks, when they use their words, their real intentions are not dominate, not to control, but their true intentions are to serve, support, inspire and help. That means when a leader is authentic, their words are authentic because they come from a different place.”

2.- KNOWING HOW TO MOVE IN THE INFORMATION ERA
Doctor in physics Doris Drucker believes that “what we really need are leaders that are able to understand that the information revolution doesn´t have to do with communication but with values and human behavior. Just as the reformists of the 19th Century fought to eliminate the excesses of the Industrial Revolution, now we need reformers that are willing to identify the excesses of the Information Revolution and who are decided on stopping them,” she adds.

3.- MEETING FACE TO FACE
The leader isn´t afraid to look their colleagues in the eye and tell them the truth. Walther Isaacson, the author of the Steve Jobs biography, admits the founder of Apple, a leader dedicated to the advance of the digital age, was a true believer in face-to-face meetings.

4.- AVOIDING PATERNALISM OR LIES
Nobody is benefited by hiding when things are going badly from the team and doing it to avoid upsetting people is not a good reason. That keeps bad things from turning worse. Mark Murphy, the founder and CEO of Leadership IQ, says that it´s necessary “to promote capacity to resistance on an adult level so that employees are ready to respond if things are not going perfectly.”

5.- IT´S OK TO BE INTROVERTED TOO
We have the preconceived idea that a leader has to be someone who´s able to go out into the world full of energy and wanting to make a bunch of noise or attract attention. However, a good leader can be introverted and being timid can create confidence in a consumer. Susan Cain defends in her book “Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World that Can´t Stop Talking” that “introverted leader tend to get more out of their employees since they are more apt to let people flow with their ideas.”

6.- IN TRUSTWORTHY COMPANY
Dan Vasella, president of the board of directors at the Swiss pharmaceutical company Novartis AG, believes it´s good to have “a member of the board, an advisor or someone to whom they can say: “I´m fed up; I´m going to quit” or “I´d like to kick that dude´s ass”. Sometimes talking out loud with someone who´s listening fixes a lot of problems.

7.- KEEP SURROUNDING YOURSELF WITH THE BEST TEAM
Pixar realized this after the problems it had with Toy Story 2, a sequel requested by Disney for the VHS market that was left in the hands of a secondary creative team because it coincided with the filming of Bugs, on which the entire original Toy Story Team was working. The film made by the secondary team was a disaster and they had to remake it in eight months before its screening. The original version wasn´t working and what was produced came from the same idea, but the result was different thanks to the people working on it,” said Ed Catmull, the president of Walt Disney Studios and Pixar Animation Studios. “In Hollywood, everyone looks for goods ideas to turn into films. We do the opposite: we look for the best people and then we ask them for ideas,” he remarked.

8.- ONLY KNOW YOU KNOW NOTHING
A leader has many characteristics, but cannot hold all the universe´s wisdom inside. Ideally, it´s someone that asks questions and is not afraid to be asked questions. “We think that leadership is talking, but great leaders become great because of what they ask, not what they say,” said John C. Maxwell in the WBF in Mexico.

9.- BEING AWARE OF THE GOOD AND THE BAD
While you have to be prepared for the worst, you have to be able to recognize the good and to make the most out of it. Strokes of luck are just that, strokes. “The most seductive ability when leading a team is to be able to get the most out of a circumstantial occurrence. Knowing how to maximize the value of the luck is an incredibly interesting and rare skill,” says Jim Collins, business management guru.

10.- IT DOESN´T NECESSARILY HAVE TO BE THE BOSS
Many time it ends up that the great leader is at the head of the company, but it doesn´t have to be like this. Taking an example from the army, where “your first day is your first day as a leader”, thinking systems expert Peter Senge breaks apart the idea of the leader of a hierarchy. That means these characteristics that we believe every “boss” should have when they´re in charge should also be extended to all of those who simply work for the company because when you´re under pressure, everyone should have a leader´s mentality.
