How do you know when the best time is to buy or sell stocks?

04/12/2015 | Notimerica – Notimerica English

Buying or selling shares on the stock market has similar risk to playing bingo; sometimes you win and sometimes you lose. According to the experts, there is no magic formula that tells when´s the best time to make your move.

However, there is a series studies that give a diagnostic on the circumstances in which you can obtain the greatest earnings per operation.

FUNDAMENTAL ANALYSIS

Variable yield analyst Ómar Suárez at Alianza valores explains the first area to look at is known in stock market argot as “fundamental analysis” in which, first of all, growth expectation are looked at for the business you´re going to invest in. Next, the prospects for the development of the economy in the country where the company is located are looked at. Finally, the economic outlook for the sector in which the company is carrying out its activity is analyzed.

To determine this series of variables and to see how the data obtained can favor the financial state of the company or not contribute to being able to make the decision to sell or buy a stock,” said Suárez.

RELATIVE VALUATION

For variable yield analyst at Casa de bolsa Camilo Gómez, the next analysis that should be done is called “valuation using multiples”. This analysis compares the main indicators of a company´s stock with the stocks of similar companies, which means companies are homogenized within the same sectors in order to know if their indicators are good or bad.

“Using this analysis, you can figure out what the financial valuations are like, for example, the net price-earnings ratio of the company. This outcome is taken from all the companies and an average is made,” indicated Gómez while adding “if the company is under the average, it´s cheap and, therefore, it would be a good time to buy the stock and, on the other hand, if it´s above the average, it´s expensive and would be good to sell.

TECHNICAL ANALYSIS

Lastly, the economic analyst at acciones y valores Izhak Kempowsky believes the third strategy that can shed some light on when to trade stocks is called “technical analysis”.

In this model, you use graphs to examine the historical behavior of a stock in order to know when the stock has the same price –generally low- and to know how it got there, what was going on in the sector and the economy at that time, which allows you to determine if the two moments are comparable to foresee what the stock is going to do in order to carry out the operation that best suits you: to buy or sell the security.
