04/21/2015 | Europa Press – Europa Press English

The European Union Office of Statisitics, Eurostat, published the data on the 2014 public debt and deficit for every Member State of the EU on Tuesday, which show that Spanish coffers have created a deficit of 5.8%m, second only to Cyprus.

Only Cyprus is above Spain in that macroeconomic measurement with a deficit of 8.8%. In any case these data include the money that was provided in the assistance given to banks, but do not consider the sanctions that are levied for excessive debt.

After Spain, comes Croatia and the UK (-5.7%), Slovenia (-4.9%), Portugal (-4.5%), Ireland (-4.1%) and France (-4%). Four countries were able to generate a surplus in 2014: Denmark (+1.2%), Germany (+1.2%) and Luxembourg and Estonia (+0.6%).

On the other hand, Greece is the country that accumulated the most debt in 2014 (177.1% of its GDP), followed by Italy (132.1%) and Portugal (130.2%). The three countries with the least amount of debt were Estonia (10.6%), Luxembourg (23.6%) and Bulgaria (27.6%). Spain came in seventh of the 28 countries with a debt level of 97.7%.
