Los lideres del Partido Republicano en el Congreso de Estados Unidos han anunciado este viernes su intención de aprobar la próxima semana una extensión de tres meses del techo de deuda para dar tiempo al Senado, controlado por el Partido Demócrata, a aprobar un presupuesto que reduzca el déficit presupuestario. El plan anunciado por los Republicanos supone una nueva estrategia de la formación política para romper el bloqueo sobre el presupuesto, forzando al Senado a actuar primero. El Senado estadounidense no ha aprobado una resolución sobre el presupuesto en casi cuatro años, mientras que la Cámara de Representantes ha dado el visto bueno a planes que han muerto en la Cámara Alta. Sin embargo, el tesoro necesita ahora una aprobación del Congreso para elevar el techo de deuda de 16,4 billones de dólares (14,6 billones de euros), antes de mediados de febrero o principios de marzo. Ante esta situación, el líder de la mayoría republicana en la Cámara de Representantes, Eric Cantor, afirmo que si el Senado o la Cámara no aprueban un presupuesto antes del 15 de abril, la decisión de elevar el techo de deuda será revocada. «La próxima semana autorizaremos un aumento temporal de tres meses del techo de deuda para dar al Senado y a la Cámara tiempo de aprobar el presupuesto», aseguró Cantor en un comunicado. «Si el Senado o la Cámara no aprueban un presupuesto durante este tiempo, el pueblo norteamericano no pagará a los miembros del Congreso por no hacer su trabajo. No hay presupuesto, no hay pago«, advirtió. Por su parte, el portavoz en la Cámara de Representantes, John Boehner, añadió que no habrá incremento a largo plazo en el techo de deuda del Gobierno federal hasta que el Senado apruebe un presupuesto, y subrayó que la Cámara intentará forzar al Senado para que tome medidas en el recorte del gasto. |

The leaders of the Republican Party in the U.S. Congress announced this Friday its intention to pass an extension next week of the debt ceiling for three months to give the Senate, controlled by the Democratic Party, time to pass a budget that reduces the budget deficit. The plan announced by the Republicans shows a new strategy for the political party to break the deadlock surrounding the budget, forcing the Senate to act first. The U.S. Senate hasn’t passed a resolution on the budget in almost four years, while the House of Representatives approved plans that were later dismissed. However, the Treasury now needs the approval of Congress to raise the debt ceiling of 16.4 trillion dollars (14.6 trillion euros) before the middle of February or the beginning of March. Facing this situation, the House leader Eric Cantor, Rep., stated that if the Senate or House doesn’t pass the budget before the 15 of April, the decision to raise the debt ceiling will be revoked. “Next week we will authorise a temporary increase in the debt ceiling for three months in order to give the Senate and the House time to approve the budget”, indicated Cantor in an announcement. “If the Senate or the House does not approve a budget during this time, the United States will not pay the members of Congress for not doing their job. No budget, no pay”, he warned. Also, the Speaker of the House, John Boehner, added that there won’t be any long-term increase in the debt ceiling for the Federal Government until the Senate approves a budget and insisted that the House will try to force the Senate to take measures to cut spending. |
