The Ten Commandments of the perfect intern in order to move up in the company

11/24/2014 | Europa Press – Europa Press English

It´s possible being an intern may not be the most marvelous thing in the world and just listening to the word can make chills run down your spine. But don´t worry because if you´re still in college, being an intern is something you´re going to have to go through sooner or later.

Having an internship while you´re studying can be the first step towards the job market, while learning many more things than during those years in class and while making contacts within your area of expertise that can be useful in your professional future.

It´s true that in today´s world, being an intern is a phase that usually lasts longer than expected, but you can avoid having it follow you your whole life by putting these key points and pieces of advice in to practice provided by Human Resources director of Jobandtalent, Ramon Egea, in order “to leave an impression on your superiors” and get that promotion you hoped for.

1. You have to be a “sponge”. Absorb the company´s philosophy, demonstrate you can adapt yourself to that philosophy and make sure it´s reflected in your work. “It´s much more valuable to fit in with the company´s mentality than knowing how to carry out the tasks you´re assigned”.

2. You don´t have to show you´re a “master” once you´ve got your new job. During the first few days you should just concentrate on learning.

3. Your attitude, pro-activeness and positive nature at work is what will make you stand out from the rest of the interns. “Be passionate and do your best”.

4. Be decisive. You should know that companies look for young people that “know how to get out of a jam quickly, and are able to understand things and face difficult situations”.

5. Be an observer. This will help you to “identify necessities” within the company and you should offer to figure out how to meet them.

6. Although this may seem obvious, always be punctual to work. This reflects your attitude and willingness and it´s something your boss will focus on a lot.

7. You have to be able to make yourself “indispensable” within your team.

8. One way to do this is to integrate yourself with your co-workers. “Managers value those interns highly that end up becoming part of the team and become another member of the company”.

9. Once you´ve become a perfect intern, you have to analyze whether there are real possibilities to prosper and to get hired by the company and you have to let your superiors know you´re interested in staying on.

10. Above all and whatever happens, you should look at your internship as “an opportunity”.
