Just 33% of investors carefully read the prospectus of the mutual fund they are going to invest in

10/22/2014 | Europa Press – Europa Press English

Just 33% of investors carefully read the prospectus of the mutual fund they´re thinking of investing in, according to a survey carried out by the Inverco Observatory, which shows that nine out of ten investors know which category their mutual fund invests their equity and eight out of ten investors usually review the information they receive periodically.

According to the study, half of the investors say they have a moderate risk profile, a similar percentage define themselves as conservative (42%) and 9% say they have a dynamic risk profile. 43% of the investors are between the ages of 46 and 65 and 37% are between 36 and 45 years old.

As for the amount being invested in these financial products, four out of ten investors have up to 20,000 euros invested in mutual funds. The report says that 78% of them invest in mutual funds for at least three years.

The majority of stakeholders (67%) say the information they receive on their mutual fund seems understandable, a number that´s significantly higher compared to 2012 when only 44% said they could understand it. In that sense, the aspects that were most interesting were the information on the equity and profitability, followed by the movements made within the portfolio.

The member of Inverco Observatory, Gonzalo Rengifo, said the increase in interest of the periodic information that investors receive comes from the growth in mutual fund investment and from the greater simplicity in the documents that are sent to investors as well as awareness by customers about which assets and markets their mutual funds are investing in. “There´s still a lot to do, especially since only three out of ten investors read their prospectus carefully before buying into a mutual fund,” he said.

Profit made from mutual funds
According to the study, seven out of ten investors say the mutual funds obtain their profits from investing in financial markets, while in 2012 only five out of ten gave the correct response. In that sense, the number of investors that know that behind the management of the mutual fund is a qualified professional has also increased slightly: 40% in 2014, compared to 35% in 2012.

The profitability of the product is the aspect that investors value most about the entities that manage their funds (35%). The second most important thing is its ability to provide high quality customer service (21%) and the third most important thing it that the entity is an expert in specific markets or asset classes (16%).

63% of the investors know the funds are regulated or supervised by a public organism and five out of ten know that if their brokerage went bankrupt they wouldn´t lose their investment.

In terms of fiscal advantages, 76% of the investors know they can defer payment on taxes up until they redeem their investment, 16 points higher than in 2012. Regarding transfers, 75% know they can change their investment from one fund to another without any fiscal costs (only 43% knew that in 2012). Despite this positive figure, the majority of investors, regardless of their profile, don´t know the tax advantages of mutual funds compared to the rest of the financial products.
